Laser Vaginal Rejuvenation
Childbirth, aging, and hormonal changes can all affect a woman’s genitalia. As a result, the woman might experience a loss of sensation, loss of vaginal lubrication, loss of vaginal tone, and stress urinary incontinence. Laser vaginal rejuvenation is an umbrella term used to describe a variety of different minimally invasive procedures that can help restore a woman’s genitalia and increase her comfort and confidence.
At The Vu Center in Portland, we’re proud to offer a variety of plastic and cosmetic surgery options, including laser vaginal rejuvenation. The goal of our practice is to help people feel more confident and happy in their own skin, and our board-certified surgeons, Dr. Kim Chi Vu, MD., and Dr. Jared Madsen, can help you determine what procedures will deliver your desired results. If you are interested in laser vaginal rejuvenation or another procedure that we offer, don’t hesitate to reach out to our team to request a consultation today! Who Is a Good Candidate?
Because vaginal rejuvenation covers a variety of procedures, there are many women who qualify as good candidates. It’s important to note that these candidates vary in age, and are not restricted to women who are going through menopause or have given birth. Those who could benefit from vaginal rejuvenation include women who experience:
- Loose or stretched out contours of the genital structures
- Soreness or pain with exercise or sexual activity
- Significantly reduced sensation during sexual activity
- Mild to moderate leaky bladder (urinary incontinence)
In addition to the physical symptoms above, a woman may also choose to receive vaginal rejuvenation if she wants to improve the contours of her genital structures. Regardless of the reason for electing to receive vaginal rejuvenation, it’s important that the patient has reasonable expectations going into the procedure. Not every woman’s body is the same, therefore, one patient’s results may not look the same as another’s.
Preparing for Surgery
Prior to your surgery, we ask that all patients schedule a consultation with one of our board-certified plastic surgeons. The consultation gives the surgeon the opportunity to meet the patient and explain the surgery, as well as give the patient the opportunity to ask any questions they have regarding the procedure. Because vaginal rejuvenation encompasses many different procedures to correct or improve various issues, your surgeon will use the consultation to get a better idea of what problem you’re trying to address and what procedure will work best to fix it. If you’re interested in fixing multiple problems in one surgery, your surgeon will also discuss your options and provide you with advice on what procedures they think will provide you with the optimal results.
At the end of the consultation, your surgeon, or a nurse, will provide you with more information about your recovery and how you can prepare for the surgery. Your surgeon may request that you stop taking certain medications or that you stop certain activities prior to your procedure to reduce the risk of complications.
The Vaginal Rejuvenation Procedure
At The Vu Center, we offer laser vaginal rejuvenation, which is a minimally invasive technique used to heat up the tissue under the guidance of a board-certified surgeon. While this may sound painful, the procedure is fairly well tolerated by most patients and typically does not require any type of sedation. Unlike other plastic surgery procedures, laser vaginal rejuvenation can take place in an office setting, as opposed to in a hospital. In fact, depending on the type of procedure that you receive, it may only take five to 10 minutes. However, this depends on the procedure your surgeon is performing.
Recovery and Results
The heat from the laser used during your procedure stimulates the tissue and encourages your body to produce more collagen in the targeted areas. While many patients may experience improvements after the first session, it’s not uncommon for surgeons to require their patients to come back to the office for several more sessions over four to six weeks. After the initial sessions, most surgeons recommend that patients seek treatment annually to keep up with the results.
While this treatment can be effective in treating vaginal laxity, tone loss, stress incontinence, and more, it’s important to remember that vaginal rejuvenation cannot guarantee heightened sexual arousal, as that is a highly personal response.
