What To Consider Before A Breast Augmentation: Part One

Breast augmentation, more commonly known as a “boob job,” is a procedure where the fullness of the breasts is increased. While one patient may want to increase the fullness because they desire bigger breasts, another patient may want to restore her natural breast size after substantial weight loss or pregnancy.

Continue reading below for part one in this multi-part series where we discuss a few things you should consider before a breast augmentation surgery.

Fat Transfer or Implants

With a breast augmentation procedure, you have the option of choosing between implants or a fat transfer from somewhere else on your body. In the past, women only had the option of using implants to increase the volume of their breasts. However, according to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, the number of breast augmentation procedures that used autologous fat grafts increased by 72 percent in 2016.

If you choose to do a fat transfer to increase the volume of your breasts, the plastic surgeon will first use liposuction to extract fat from another area of your body. The fat is then processed so that it is in a condition that can easily be injected into the breast. For those considering doing a fat transfer over implants, consult with your surgeon to see if this option is right for you!

Breast Augmentation Cannot Fix Sagging

Those with breasts that sag may feel that a breast augmentation is the solution to their problems. However, increased volume in the breasts could have the opposite effect. For those who desire to fix their sagging breasts while also increasing the size may choose to combine a breast augmentation procedure with a breast lift, or mastopexy, procedure. A breast lift will tighten the skin, in addition to removing any excess tissue. During the procedure, the surgeon may also reposition the nipple and areolar area in order to achieve a more appealing aesthetic.

Expect Surgeries In The Future

Majority of women who choose to undergo a breast augmentation procedure will have to have additional breast surgeries in the future. One of the most common reasons for additional surgery is to replace implants. Unfortunately, breast implants don’t last forever. Both saline and silicone implants will last about 10 years, but women will still need to have yearly checkups to make sure their implants don’t have any leaks.

As mentioned above, some women may choose to combine a breast augmentation procedure with a breast lift procedure. If you don’t have a breast lift at the time of your breast augmentation procedure, you may change your mind at a later date.

Choosing The Right Implant

You may think that the decision involving your implant is as simple as silicone versus saline, however, there are many factors that play a role in the type of implant that you choose. Shape, texture, and profile are just a few things you will have to think about before the actual breast augmentation procedure. It’s best to consult with the surgeon before you make your decision, as he or she will be able to tell you what size and shape will look best with your body type.

These are just a few things for you to consider before you undergo a breast augmentation. In part two we will discuss a few more important factors that you should keep in mind.
