Mommy Makeover

Being pregnant and giving birth can take a toll on your body, and many women notice changes in their body after they’ve given birth. Postpartum, there are many areas of the body that can change, including the abdomen, waist, breasts, buttocks, and genitalia. While an individual can choose to have separate plastic surgery procedures performed on these areas, a mommy makeover is typically performed as a single-stage procedure.

If your body just hasn’t recovered after having children, a mommy makeover may be for you. At The Vu Center, our talented surgeons, Dr. Kim Chi Vu, MD. and Dr. Jared Madsen, have years of experience. Our Portland plastic surgery clinic offers a variety of different plastic surgery procedures to help achieve your desired look so that you feel comfortable in the body that you’re in. Mommy Makeover Candidates

The overall goal of a mommy makeover is to help restore the look and shape of a woman’s body after carrying and giving birth to a child. Because there are many different procedures involved in a mommy makeover, it’s recommended that those interested in a mommy makeover are finished childbearing.

With a mommy makeover procedure, there are many different techniques that your surgeon can use to achieve your desired results, as well as many factors to consider when choosing which technique is best, including:

  • Placement of the incisions
  • Type of implants
  • The desired amount of restoration

Your surgeon will discuss these options with you during your consultation.

While physical health is vital for an individual who is interested in a mommy makeover, it’s also recommended that the individual has a positive outlook and realistic expectations for the results. It’s important to remember that each patient’s body is different and results may be different across the board.

Preparing for Surgery

Before you can even schedule a date for your surgery, you will first need to schedule a consultation with the board-certified surgeon who will perform the operation. During the consultation, the surgeon will go over the mommy makeover surgery in detail. Because the mommy makeover involves so many different procedures, your surgeon will take some time to talk to you about your overall goals for the procedure. From there, they will be able to advise you on what procedures will help you best achieve those goals.

At the end of your consultation, you will schedule your surgery. Your surgeon will also provide you with a list of pre-op instructions. These instructions may ask you to adjust your current medications or stop taking supplements among other things. It’s vital that you follow your pre-op instructions, as they can help avoid complications during your procedure or recovery.

Procedure Steps

On the day of your surgery, your surgeon will start by administering either anesthesia or intravenous sedation to help keep you comfortable during your procedure. Because a mommy makeover takes place while the patient is sedated, patients are required to have a friend or family member transport them to and from the hospital, as well as take care of them on the first day of their recovery. Please make sure you have your ride arranged prior to your surgery.

During your consultation, your surgeon will explain the details of your surgery as they pertain to your personalized plan. To learn more about the types of incisions used on each procedure, visit their individual pages:

Results and Recovery

After your surgery is complete, your surgeon may cover your incisions with gauze or bandages, as well as a compression garment to help minimize swelling. Depending on your procedure, you may also have a bandage or support bra to support the breasts. At The Vu Center, we want to ensure that all of our patients feel comfortable with their post-op instructions before going home. In addition to talking to you after your surgery, we will also send you home with written instructions detailing care, medications to take, concerns, and when to follow up with your doctor.

Following your mommy makeover procedure, it may take several months for the final results to appear. Over time, incisions will heal and swelling will go down, revealing your new look. Keep in mind, while scars may fade over time, they may never go away completely. However, most patients feel this is a small price to pay in order to feel comfortable and confident in their own bodies.
