Who Is a Good Candidate?
The great thing about liposuction is that men of all ages can benefit from this type of cosmetic surgery. This procedure helps to slim and reshape areas where the patient may have trouble eliminating excess fat. Some of the most common areas to receive liposuction include:
- Back
- Thighs
- Hips and buttocks
- Abdomen and waist
- Chest area
- Inner knee
- Upper arms
- Cheeks, chin, and neck
That being said, it’s important to note that liposuction is not a weight loss cure. Those who are considering a liposuction procedure should be healthy and looking for a way to eliminate areas of stubborn fat that won’t decrease with proper diet and exercise. We also insist that our patients have a positive and realistic outlook, as well as specific goals for their body contouring session. When you meet with one of our surgeons, they will discuss your goals and create a plan that will work best to achieve them. However, not all patients are the same, and your results may not look the same as another patient’s. If you have any questions, don’t hesitate to reach out to our team at The Vu Center to schedule a consultation.
Before Surgery
If you are considering liposuction, the first thing you will need to do is schedule a consultation with one of our board-certified plastic surgeons. During the consultation, the surgeon will discuss the steps of the procedure, as well as your expectations for the results. From there, your surgeon will work with you to create a plan that will help you get the best results possible. If you have any questions or would like clarification about your surgery, you can ask during the consultation or you can call our office.
Before you leave the appointment, the surgeon will schedule a date and time for you to have your surgery and provide you with a list of pre-operative instructions. These instructions may ask that you quit smoking and quit taking certain medications or supplements prior to your surgery to reduce the risk of complications. We want to make sure that you are completely comfortable with your procedure before you leave, so be sure to ask any questions that you may have.
Liposuction Procedure
On the day of your procedure, you will receive medications to help make you more comfortable. Your options are local anesthesia, general anesthesia, or intravenous sedation — your surgeon will discuss the best option for you prior to your surgery.
Once the medications have been administered, your surgeon will make an incision and start the procedure. For a liposuction procedure, the surgeon will make small, inconspicuous incisions. After making the incision, the surgeon will use anesthesia to reduce the bleeding before inserting a thin, hollow tube into the incision. Using the tube, the surgeon will loosen excess fat by moving the tube in a controlled back and forth motion. The fat is then suctioned out of the body using a surgical vacuum or syringe.
Results and Recovery
Following your surgery, the final results may not be apparent right away. A liposuction procedure can result in fluid retention and swelling around the areas that were treated. As a result, you may have to wait for the swelling to go down before you can see the final results of your procedure. It’s also important to keep in mind that every body is different, and your results may not look the same as another patient’s.
To help your incisions heal, your surgeon may place a compression garment or elastic bandages on the treatment areas. These bandages can help control the swelling, as well as help compress the skin to your new body contours. Before you leave the hospital, you will also receive a list of post-operative instructions that include how to care for your incisions, activities to avoid, a healing timeline, and a date and time to follow up with your surgeon. If you have any questions following your procedure, don’t hesitate to reach out to The Vu Center in Portland.
