Gynecomastia

Your appearance can have a huge effect on your confidence levels, and for men who have large breast tissue, they may feel insecure in their appearance. Gynecomastia is a surgical procedure in which the surgeon will reduce the breast size in a male individual and enhance the chest contours, giving them a more masculine figure. If you or someone you know suffers from this condition, don’t hesitate to reach out to our friendly staff at The Vu Center!

At The Vu Center, we offer a variety of plastic and cosmetic surgery options that are designed to both make your life easier and help you feel more confident and comfortable in your own skin. We also specialize in a variety of options specifically targeted to men, including gynecomastia. If you are interested in learning more about this particular procedure or any of the other procedures that we offer, don’t hesitate to reach out to our office to schedule a consultation. In the meantime, continue reading below to learn more about the gynecomastia procedure.

Who Is a Good Candidate?

Gynecomastia causes overdeveloped or enlarged breasts in men, and in some severe cases, it may cause sagging and stretching of the areola. In these cases, the areola may need to be repositioned during the surgery. If you are interested in a reduction mammaplasty — the technical term of the procedure used to correct gynecomastia — our team at The Vu Center is here to help. Typically, we look for candidates who:

  • Cannot correct the condition through alternative medicine treatments
  • Are physically healthy and have a relatively normal weight
  • Nonsmokers and non-drug users
  • Are bothered by the feeling that their breasts are too large
  • Have a positive outlook about the procedure
  • Have realistic expectations

If you feel that you are a good candidate for a reduction mammaplasty to correct your gynecomastia, we are more than happy to help. To learn more and schedule an appointment for a consultation, contact our Portland plastic surgery clinic today!

Preparing for Surgery

Prior to scheduling your surgery, you will need to schedule a consultation at our clinic. The consultation is a necessary step before we schedule the date for your procedure, as it gives the doctor a chance to fully explain the surgery and what you can expect. At The Vu Center, we want all of our patients to be completely comfortable before, during, and after their procedure, which is why we encourage you to ask questions during the consultation to make sure you feel confident in your decision. The board-certified surgeon may also use this time to go over your options if you have any. For example, if the gynecomastia causes your areolas to sag or stretch, they may talk you through the process to have those moved and shaped to have a more pleasing appearance.

At the end of your consultation, the surgeon will help you schedule a date and time for your surgery. You may also be given a list of pre-op instructions that you will need to follow in order to reduce the risk of complications during your reduction mammaplasty procedure. If you have any questions leading up to the date of your surgery, don’t hesitate to reach out to a member of our staff at The Vu Center!

Reduction Mammaplasty Procedure

For a reduction mammaplasty procedure, there are three different techniques your surgeon could use to treat your gynecomastia:

  • Excision Technique –  If the surgeon needs to remove glandular breast tissue, as well as excess skin, they will use the excision technique. This technique also allows the surgeon to reposition the nipple if necessary. The incision will depend on the specific condition.
  • Liposuction Technique – If gynecomastia is the result of excess fatty tissue, the surgeon may choose to use the liposuction technique, which is similar to liposuction you might receive on the abdomen. Learn more on our liposuction page.
  • Combination of Liposuction and Excision Techniques – In some more severe cases, the surgeon may use a combination of both the liposuction and the excision techniques to reduce the size of the breast and improve the contour of the chest.

Results and Recovery

During your recovery, there may be bandages or dressings on the incisions, as well as a compression garment to help minimize swelling. Your surgeon will provide you with specific instructions on how to care for your incisions and what activities you can and can’t do in the days following your surgery. If you have any questions at any time, don’t hesitate to reach out to our staff.

After the procedure, you may experience some swelling around your breasts. However, that should go down as you heal. With a reduction mammaplasty surgery, the results are visible almost immediately, so you’ll be able to enjoy your newly contoured chest right away.
