Everything You Need to Know About Rhinoplasty

When you think of cosmetic surgery, you most likely think of BOTOX®, breast augmentations, and liposuction. Not many people think about rhinoplasty as a common cosmetic surgery, but it is actually one of the most frequently performed cosmetic surgeries, especially for men. In addition to giving you a more shapely nose, there are a number of medical reasons for which someone may choose to receive a rhinoplasty. In today’s post, we will give you more information about rhinoplasty surgery to help you understand why this procedure is in such high demand.

What is a Rhinoplasty?

A rhinoplasty, more commonly known as a nose job, is a procedure in which the surgeon improves the symmetry, shape, and size of an individual’s nose. Not only will this procedure help your nose look more aesthetically pleasing, but it can also help those who have trouble breathing. With that in mind, it’s also important to note that if you are considering receiving a rhinoplasty, you will need to find a doctor who is specialized in the technique.

Who is an Ideal Candidate?

Unlike other cosmetic procedures which may be designed specifically for men or specifically for women, rhinoplasty is a great procedure that can benefit both. There are numerous reasons why someone may decide to undergo a rhinoplasty, whether it be to improve their physical appearance or medical necessity. That being said, not everyone is a good candidate for the procedure.

Cosmetic surgeons often consult with many teenagers about the rhinoplasty procedure. While there are many teens who receive the surgery, plastic surgeons have to take special care when considering whether the patient is ready for the procedure and wants it for the right reasons. When choosing the ideal candidate, surgeons look for things like nasal maturity, an understanding of the risks, realistic expectations, and emotional maturity. In addition to being emotionally and physically ready to have the surgery, you also can be a good candidate if you have one of the following conditions:

  • A nose that is too wide or narrow
  • Drooping nasal tip
  • Dorsal hump – a bump at the bridge of the nose
  • A twisted or deviated nose
  • Prominent nasal tip
  • Shape deformities after a nasal injury
  • Nasal airway problems

The Different Types of Rhinoplasty Surgeries

It may come as no surprise that the rhinoplasty procedure is highly individualized to meet the patient’s needs and desires. As we mentioned above, this procedure requires the skills and techniques of a surgeon who is specifically trained in rhinoplasty procedures. Because the procedure is customized to fit each individual, the doctor may use slightly different techniques each time they perform a rhinoplasty. That being said, there are three general techniques that a surgeon may use when performing a rhinoplasty.

  • Open Rhinoplasty: For this technique, the plastic surgeon will make a small incision under the tip of your nose. This gives the doctor more access to the inside of your nose, allowing them to easily sculpt the nose into the desired shape. This technique is more commonly used for patients who require extensive work to achieve their desired outcome.
  • Closed Rhinoplasty: As opposed to an open rhinoplasty, a closed rhinoplasty technique involves making small incisions inside of the nose. Doctors will use this technique if the nose needs only minimal adjustments. The benefit of this technique over the open rhinoplasty technique is that once the nose has healed, the patient won’t have any visible scarring.
  • Triplasty: A triplasty is not so much a technique as it is the area in which the surgeon will make adjustments. During a triplasty, the surgeon will work on the tip of the nose without affecting any other areas.
