Who Is a Candidate for Hand Surgery

There are many reasons that may result in someone having hand surgery. For example, if you have broken your hand recently or in the past, and the bones didn’t heal correctly, then you may choose to have hand surgery to reset the bones and improve function. Additionally, an individual may elect to have hand surgery to aid with carpal tunnel syndrome or ganglion cysts.

At The Vu Center, our hand specialist offers hand surgery for the following conditions:

  • Soft tissue injuries
  • Ganglion cyst
  • Fractures/dislocations
  • Carpal tunnel syndrome
  • Lacerations/open wounds

If you believe that you are a good candidate for hand surgery, then contact The Vu Center and schedule an appointment with our hand specialist.

What to Expect

Most, if not all, plastic surgery procedures require downtime of some kind to help your body recover, and hand surgery is no different. As mentioned earlier, you use your hands for a multitude of different things, and having to take it easy and not use your hand after surgery may seem difficult. However, it’s important to give your hand time to heal before you try to use it the same way you did in the past. If you don’t give it time to heal, then you may suffer more damage to your hand, and in some cases, you may lose complete function.

Your recovery time is determined by the surgery you recieve. For example, if you are receiving surgery to have a cyst removed, then your recovery time will most likely be shorter than someone who receives hand surgery to fix a broken bone. That being said, once your surgery is complete you may experience some mild pain, and your hand may be immobilized with a bandage or a splint. Your doctor will be able to give you more information prior to and after the surgery.
