Buttock Augmentation

A buttock augmentation is a cosmetic procedure that is used to improve the size, shape, and contour of the buttock. Typically, the plastic surgeon enhances the appearance of the buttock using implants, fat grafting, or a combination of the two.

There are many reasons why an individual may choose to have a buttock augmentation, but in most cases, the reason is strictly cosmetic. If you are considering a buttock augmentation, or you’re wondering if this cosmetic procedure is the right choice for you, our team at The Vu Center is here to help! We offer a variety of plastic and cosmetic procedures to meet your needs. Our board-certified plastic surgeons are here to help you feel more comfortable in your own body, so if you would like to learn more about the services we offer, reach out to our Portland plastic surgery clinic today!

Who Is a Good Candidate?

Buttock augmentation is a great option for many patients. This procedure can help increase the fullness and projection of the buttock, improve the balance of your figure, and give you confidence.

In order to determine if you are a good candidate for the procedure, we recommend scheduling a consultation with one of our board-certified surgeons. During the consultation, the doctor will walk you through the entire procedure, as well as give you a physical exam to help determine if you are a good fit for the procedure. Typically, we look for candidates who:

  • Are physically healthy
  • Have realistic expectations
  • Have an asymmetrical buttock
  • Feel as though their buttock is too small
  • Are unhappy with the general shape of their buttock

While a general dislike for the physical appearance of their buttock is the main concern, it is also vital that the patient has realistic expectations about the procedure. Each person is different, and it’s important that our patients understand that the results of one patient’s buttock augmentation may not look the same as their own. That being said, our surgeons do their very best to work with you and create a plan that can provide you with the results you desire.

Preparing for Surgery

As we mentioned above, the first thing you will need to do before you schedule your surgery date is attend a consultation with our plastic surgeons. The consultation will give you an opportunity to learn more about your procedure, as well as ask any questions you may have. Once you and the surgeon have discussed the specifics, you will schedule the date for your surgery. As you leave, your surgeon may provide you with a list of pre-op instructions you must follow, such as:

  • Getting a blood test
  • Stopping smoking
  • Avoiding taking certain medications that could interfere with the anesthesia

It’s important that you follow these instructions, as they are designed to help prevent any possible complications that may arise either during the surgery or during your recovery process.

The Procedure

There are a few different techniques that the surgeon can use to perform a buttock augmentation. The technique they choose is determined by the amount of fat you have on your body, the size and shape of your desired buttock, your goals and activity level, and the quality of your skin. The two most common techniques used for a buttock augmentation are:

Implants

If your surgeon believes that implants are the best option for you, they will start by making an incision. Depending on your procedure, the surgeon can make the incision toward the bottom of both gluteal creases, toward the top of the sides of upper buttocks, or between both cheeks. Once the incision is made, the surgeon will place the implant either in the muscle or above the gluteal muscle on both sides. The buttock implants are specifically designed according to the goals you discussed with your surgeon.

After the surgeon has placed the implants, the last step is to close the incision using skin adhesive, surgical tape, or layered sutures.

Fat Grafting

Fat grafting is where the surgeon uses the patient’s own fat to improve the appearance of the buttock. During this type of procedure, the surgeon will first perform liposuction through small, unobtrusive incisions. The surgeon will typically take up to three times the amount of fat needed for the buttock augmentation.

The fat, tissue, and blood collected during the liposuction procedure is then processed and put into syringes that are connected to a special cannula. The surgeon will then use the syringes to inject the fat into the buttocks.

Recovery and Results

Following the buttock augmentation procedure, the surgeon will place bandages over the incisions to help them heal. You may also have tubes inserted to help drain any excess blood and fluid. That being said, most patients can return home a few hours after their surgery is complete. However, it’s vital that you arrange for a ride home prior to your surgery, as it is not safe for patients to attempt to drive themselves home.

Before you leave, your surgeon will provide you with a list of post-op care instructions that are specific to your cosmetic procedure. If you have any questions, it’s important to ask either before you leave or call The Vu Center once you are home. In most cases, you will be instructed to wear a support garment and avoid prolonged sitting for at least two weeks until your surgical site has time to heal.

The results of your buttock augmentation procedure are visible almost immediately. That being said, it may take some time for the final results to fully develop, especially if the surgeon used the fat grafting technique. If you have any questions, please make sure to consult with your surgeon.
