ARM LIFT

An arm lift, or brachioplasty, is a surgical procedure that is used to help those who may feel self-conscious about sagging skin in the upper arm region. There are many natural causes of sagging skin around the arms, including fluctuations in weight, heredity, aging, and more. Unfortunately, exercise cannot fix sagging skin around the arms, but an arm lift can!

If you’re tired of or feel embarrassed about having sagging skin around the upper part of your arm, The Vu Center in Portland is here to help! Our board-certified plastic surgeons, Dr. Kim Chi Vu, MD and Dr. Jared Madsen, have years of experience and offer a number of plastic surgery options that can help you feel more comfortable in your own body. Whether you’re interested in an arm lift or another procedure, we are more than happy to help. Explore our website to learn more, and give us a call to schedule a consultation!

Arm Lift Candidates

Ideal candidates for an arm lift are those who have skin on the underside of their upper arms that is sagging or appears loose and full due to excess skin and fat. Should an individual choose to have an arm lift, can expect the arm lift to:

  • Reduce localized pockets of fat in the upper arms
  • Reduce excess sagging skin that droops downward
  • Tighten and smooth underlying supportive tissue that defines the shape of the upper arm

In addition to having loose or sagging skin around the upper arms, it’s also recommended that a candidate be healthy without any medical conditions that could impair healing and that the candidate has stable weight and is not significantly overweight. On top of the physical aspects, we also ask that candidates have a positive outlook and realistic expectations for their procedure. It’s important to note that not every body is the same, and one patient may not have the same results as another.

Preparing for Surgery

Prior to your procedure, you will need to schedule a consultation with one of our board-certified surgeons. The consultation part of the process is critical, as it gives your surgeon time to go over your expectation, the steps of the procedure, and time to discuss any questions that you have.

During the consultation, your surgeon may also give you a physical exam to determine if you are healthy enough to withstand surgery. Should you and your doctor decide that an arm lift is the best procedure to help you achieve your desired results, you will then schedule a date for your procedure. Before you leave, your surgeon will provide you with a list of pre-op instructions. These instructions may include a request to:

  • Stop taking certain supplements or anti-inflammatory drugs that can interfere with the procedure or your recovery
  • Stop smoking
  • Take certain medications
  • Get lab testing

It’s vital that you follow the pre-op instructions your doctor gives you, as failing to follow the instructions could put you at risk.

Procedure Steps

On the day of your procedure, you will need to arrange for a friend or family member to drive you to and from the hospital, as well as be there to help take care of you that first night. Because you will be sedated with either general anesthesia or intravenous sedation, you will not be permitted to leave the hospital unless you have someone to go with you.

Once you are sedated, the surgeon will make an incision to start the procedure. There are three different types of incisions that can be made, and the type of incision your surgeon chooses will depend on the location and the amount of excess skin that will need to be removed.

For an arm lift, the three types of incisions your doctor can use are:

  • Inner arm incision – an incision on the inside of your arm from your elbow to your armpit
  • Back of arm incision – an incision on the back of your arm from your elbow to your armpit
  • Minimal incision – an incision in your armpit resulting in minimal scarring

After making the incision, your surgeon will remove excess fat and skin in your upper arms and close the incision using absorbable stitches.

Recovery and Results

Following your procedure, your incision site may be covered with dressings or bandages. You may also have a compression garment on your arm to help with the swelling. Before you leave, your doctor will provide you with post-op instructions that will tell you how to properly clean and change your bandages over the next few days.

The results of your arm lift are almost completely apparent following your surgery. However, there may be some bruising or swelling of the arms, which is completely normal. Once the swelling subsides, you will be able to see full results of your procedure.
