Abdominoplasty For Men
An abdominoplasty, or a tummy tuck, is a procedure that most people associate as a procedure for women. However, that isn’t always the case. Plastic and cosmetic surgery is performed on both men and women, and there are many procedures that can benefit both, including the tummy tuck procedure. The goal of this procedure is to tighten and tone the midsection, giving the individual a more attractive appearance.
At The Vu Center, we are proud to offer numerous plastic and cosmetic procedures for men throughout Portland. Whether you’re interested in achieving a more attractive appearance with a tummy tuck procedure or you want to eliminate stubborn belly fat with a liposuction, our board-certified surgeons are more than happy to help you look and feel comfortable in your own skin. Who Is an Ideal Candidate?
One of the common misconceptions about tummy tucks is that they are a solution for weight loss. Unfortunately, that is not the case. A tummy tuck is used to remove excess fat and skin around the midsection as a result of significant fluctuations in weight, aging, and heredity to name a few. The ideal candidate for this procedure is a man who is in good health, has reasonable expectations about the procedure, and is at their ideal weight minus any excess skin or fat that will be removed during the procedure. It’s important to note that not all patients are the same, and it’s important that the patient understands that their results may not look the same as another patient’s.
Prior to your tummy tuck procedure, you will need to schedule a consultation with one of our surgeons. During the consultation, the surgeon will assess whether or not you are a good candidate for the procedure, walk you through the steps, and give you a chance to ask questions. The surgeon will also ask you about your goals and desires for your appearance following the procedure, and if there is another accompanying procedure that can help you achieve your desired results, the surgeon may give you recommendations during your consultation as well.
Preparing for a Tummy Tuck
Following your consultation, you and your surgeon will schedule a time for you to have your surgery. The surgeon will also provide you with a list of pre-op instructions that you must follow. These instructions may include:
- Scheduling a medical evaluation
- Stop smoking
- Adjust current medications
- Avoid taking herbal supplements and anti-inflammatory drugs
It’s vital that you follow these instructions, as failing to comply could create risks with your procedure.
Additionally, you will need to arrange for someone to give you a ride to and from the hospital on the day of your procedure. During the procedure, you will be sedated using either intravenous sedation or general anesthesia. Both of these sedatives can impair your ability to drive, so you will need to have someone there to take you home and look after you for the first couple days during recovery.
The Procedure
The first step of the tummy tuck procedure is to make a horizontal incision between the pubit hairline and the belly button. The length of this incision is determined by the amount of excess skin, and the surgeon may have to make a secondary incision around the belly button if they need to remove excess skin in the upper abdomen.
Once the incision is made, the surgeon will pull the skin tight, remove any excess skin, and suture the remaining skin together. If necessary, a new hole may be created for your belly button.
Recovery
Once the tummy tuck is complete, the surgeon may cover your sutures with dressings or bandages, and you may have an elastic or compression bandage wrapped around the incision area to minimize swelling. The surgeon will also provide you with a list of post-op instructions. These instructions will outline how to care for your incision site, medications you can use, and any specific concerns you will need to watch for as your body heals. It’s vital that you follow these instructions, as they will help your body properly recover and reduce the risk of post-op infection.
As your body heals, the final results of your procedure may be obstructed by swelling temporarily. However, you should be able to enjoy your new figure with confidence within a week or two of recovery.
At The Vu Center, we want all of our patients to feel comfortable before going home following their procedure. If you have any questions or concerns about your recovery instructions, please ask one of our surgeons before you leave. Should questions arise after you’ve left, don’t hesitate to contact our clinic.
