What Are Ganglion Cysts?

Ganglion cysts are fluid-filled lumps commonly occurring near joints or tendons, typically in the wrists or hands. Although ganglion cysts are usually noncancerous, they can cause discomfort and affect mobility. In this blog by The Vu Center in Beaverton, Oregon, we’ll explore ganglion cysts, their causes, symptoms, and potential treatment options.

Causes

The exact cause of ganglion cysts is unknown. However, they often develop due to irritation or trauma to the joint or tendon. A common theory suggests that these cysts form when the tissue that surrounds a joint or tendon bulges out, forming a sac that fills with fluid.

Symptoms

  • Visible Lump: Ganglion cysts usually present as a noticeable lump under the skin. The size of the lump can vary.
  • Pain or Discomfort: Some individuals may experience pain or discomfort, especially if the cyst presses on nearby nerves.
  • Limited Mobility: Cysts near joints can restrict joint movement.
  • Changes in Sensation: Numbness or tingling in the affected area can occur if the cyst compresses nerves.

Treatment Options

In many cases, ganglion cysts do not require treatment and may disappear on their own over time. However, if the cyst causes pain, limits mobility, or affects the surrounding nerves, medical intervention may be necessary.

Treatment options include:

  • Observation: If the cyst is not causing any symptoms, your doctor may recommend simply monitoring the cyst’s size and any changes over time.
  • Immobilization: Wearing a brace or splint can help immobilize the affected joint, reducing irritation and allowing the cyst to decrease in size or disappear.
  • Aspiration: In this procedure, a healthcare professional drains the fluid from the cyst using a needle. However, there is a risk of the cyst returning after aspiration.
  • Corticosteroid Injections: In some cases, corticosteroid injections may be recommended. A healthcare professional injects a corticosteroid medication directly into the cyst. Corticosteroids help to reduce inflammation and alleviate symptoms such as pain and swelling associated with the cyst.

If these methods do not provide relief, or if the cyst recurs, surgical options from a hand surgery specialist may be considered. Surgical removal involves excising the cyst and, in some cases, the attached joint capsule or tendon sheath to prevent recurrence.
