Plastic surgery has come a long way in the last few decades, and more and more people are opting for this type of surgery to improve their appearance and confidence. However, there are still many aspects of plastic surgery that aren’t widely known, which may cause some people to hesitate when they’re considering cosmetic or corrective surgery. At The Vu Center of Oregon, we have spent years educating people about cosmetic surgery, but there’s a lot of ground to cover! In today’s blog, we’re going over things people might not know about our practice, the types of plastic surgery operations, the benefits of plastic surgery, and the inherent risks of cosmetic procedures. Read on to learn more, or simply contact us directly with any questions, and we’ll be happy to answer.

Types of Plastic Surgery Operations
Plastic surgery encompasses a range of operations, including both cosmetic and reconstructive procedures. Cosmetic surgery is primarily concerned with improving the appearance of a person, while reconstructive surgery seeks to repair or restore areas of the body that have been disfigured due to injury, disease, or birth defects. Common plastic surgery operations include facelifts, liposuction, rhinoplasty, and breast augmentation.
At The Vu Center of Oregon, we specialize in a number of different procedures, including:
- Facial cosmetic surgeries
- Body procedures (which can include liposuction)
- Breast augmentation and correction
- Hand procedures (for restorative surgery or other procedures)
- Procedures for men
That said, what The Vu Center offers is a small sampling of the world of cosmetic surgery. Who Can Perform Plastic Surgery Operations?
Not just anyone can perform plastic surgery operations. The American Board of Plastic Surgery (ABPS) is the only organization in the United States that can certify plastic surgeons. To become certified, plastic surgeons must complete at least five years of training, including two years in general surgery, and three years in plastic surgery. In addition, they must pass written and oral exams. The Vu Center’s surgeons, doctors Kim Chi Vu and Jared Madsen, are both board-certified doctors, as well as board-certified plastic surgeons.

The Benefits of Plastic Surgery
Plastic surgery can have a variety of benefits. It can help to improve physical features, boost self-confidence, and improve a person’s quality of life. For example, reconstructive surgery can restore a person’s ability to perform everyday activities, such as walking and eating, while cosmetic surgery can improve a person’s overall appearance. The results of the world’s largest-ever study on the psychological effects of plastic surgery revealed that plastic surgery made people much happier overall, usually for a myriad of different reasons. A second study published in the National Library of Medicine corroborated those findings.

The Risks of Plastic Surgery
While plastic surgery can have many benefits, it is important to understand the risks associated with the procedure. Common risks include infection, scarring, nerve damage, and blood clots. It is also important to remember that plastic surgery is still surgery, meaning there is a risk of complications and even death.
While not a risk unique to plastic surgery, there is also “downtime” associated with most cosmetic procedures. Downtime is also known as recovery time, which is a set period of time in which you will be instructed by your surgeon to rest and recover. You might even have to come back for a second visit as part of your recovery. During your second visit, we may evaluate whether or not your body is healing appropriately, remove stitches, or prescribe medications.
