Incision Location
When most people think of surgery, they picture the results and how their new body will look and feel. That being said, a breast augmentation is a type of surgery, and as such, the plastic surgeon performing the procedure will need to make an incision in order to insert the implants. One thing you will want to consider before your breast augmentation procedure is how the incision will look after it has had time to heal. Another thing to consider, and probably the most important, is breastfeeding. Typically, surgeons will recommend that the incision is placed either in the fold underneath your breast, or in the armpit area. Another option is to make an incision around the areola, however, this could cause an inability to breastfeed in the future.
During your initial consultation with one of our cosmetic surgeons at The Vu Center, we will thoroughly discuss the steps of the procedure including the placement of the incision. If you have any questions about the surgery at this time, we will be more than happy to provide you with answers.
Smoking
If you are a smoker, your doctor will advise you to stop smoking for at least two weeks prior to your breast augmentation procedure. Smoking can lead to complications during your procedure, and we want to make sure to limit as many risks as possible in order to provide you with the results you desire. The nicotine in the cigarette causes your blood vessels to constrict, which can lead to a problem with your blood circulation. In addition to issues with blood flow, the carbon monoxide can also affect how much oxygen reaches the tissue during the healing process. If you are a smoker, be sure to ask your doctor about the risks and what you can do to prevent them during your initial consultation.
Implant Placement
There are many decisions you will have to make regarding your breast augmentation procedure. In our previous blog, we mentioned that one decision you would have to make would be the type of implant you choose. Once you’ve chosen the implant, the next step is deciding where it will be placed. With implants, there are two placement options. The first is in between the pectoral muscle and the mammary gland within your breast. The second option is underneath the muscle. With each placement there are both advantages and disadvantages. It’s best to discuss the options with your doctor and he or she will be able to tell you which option will provide you with the best results.
Final Results
After your procedure, bruising and swelling are a normal part of the healing procedure. That being said, it’s important to keep in mind that it may take some time before you can really see what the final results look like. Surgery takes a toll on your body, and as a way of healing, you will experience swelling around the incision site. You may even feel tender and sore for a few days. During your follow-up appointments, your doctors will track the progress of your healing and help make any adjustments to the position of your implants.
