Preparing For Plastic Surgery
Preparing for plastic surgery is more involved than just showing up at the right location at the right time. It’s important that you start preparing weeks in advance by stopping certain medications, avoiding smoking, and more. By not listening carefully to the instructions provided by your doctor, there is a higher risk for complications during your procedure. Depending on the type of cosmetic surgery you are planning to receive, you may have more specific instruction. With that in mind, we’ve included a basic schedule to help you feel more prepared for your plastic surgery.
Three Weeks Prior
Three weeks before your surgery (or more), you will meet with your doctor to fill out any paperwork and go through the procedure. At this point, you will want to ask your doctor about any medications that you are taking and whether or not they will interfere with the cosmetic surgery. Your doctor might recommend that you stop taking certain medications in order to avoid any reactions with the anesthesia. You will also want to quit smoking and drinking. The longer something takes to heal, the bigger the scar will be. Because the nicotine in cigarettes slows down the healing process, you will want to quit smoking three weeks prior to your procedure so that all of the nicotine has time to leave your system.
Two Weeks Prior
If you are taking any medications that may interfere with your surgery. Additionally, stop use if you are taking any anticoagulants, aspirin, or anti-inflammatory drugs, as they may cause complications if used too close to the surgery. If you have any questions, be sure to consult with your doctor.
During this time, you will also want to start preparing for your recovery. The length of your recovery depends on the plastic surgery procedure that you are receiving. However, most procedures require at least one day of recovery, as well as someone to drive you home once the surgery is completed.
One Week Prior
For most procedures, doctors will prescribe a pain-killer to help with any pain or discomfort that you may feel after the surgery. Instead of waiting to fill the prescription after the cosmetic surgery, it’s best if you get it filled one week before your scheduled surgery. This allows you enough time to deal with any problems that might arise. Not to mention, you don’t want to have to deal with trying to get the prescription filled right after your surgery when you may need it most.
It’s also important that you get a lot of rest and focus on eating well prior to your cosmetic surgery. You want your body to feel its best leading up to the surgery. Plastic surgery takes a lot out of your body, and after the procedure, you most likely won’t have a lot of energy, therefore you need to feel well-rested and strong beforehand.
Night Before Surgery
The night before your surgery, it’s important that you follow-up on the time you need to arrive for your surgery. It’s also important that you follow any specific instructions that your doctor gave you. For example, you may be required to take a shower using a special antibacterial soap. Most procedures also require that you don’t eat or drink anything the night before your plastic surgery. Above all, it’s a good idea to get a good night’s rest before your surgery, despite any nerves or anxiety you may be feeling.
